That year the second year of my involvement with the national team, after being introduced to the sport in my first year at uni. That is also the year that a knee injury put an end to my sporting dream.

it is not the most popular of sports, but the challenges is very different. Different requirements. Different techniques, different technology. On different environment.

Water.

Oh, did you know that I could not even swim? And the sport does not even use life jackets?

But nothing beats the gliding of the boat on a windless, cast day, on water as still as glass, with each drop of water falling off the blades creating mini ripples not unlike the breadcrumbs of lore. And the mechanical sound of the oar collar, twisted at the gate, right before we slide our seat forward is as reassuring as it is crude.

Love. Fear.

Feels like I am falling in love again. Should be working on loving all things about rowing, all over again. After all, it is also hard work to love something. Or someone.

We have known each other for almost a decade. When I first lay my eyes on Scotty, he was in a corner, lying motionless. You see, he was involved in an accident which leave him badly scarred. I ask my Coach, whether I could take him home, and help him to realise his true calling.

But it was not easy. Even having a normal one would readily put a strain financially, what's more an injured one. But, slowly he starts to resemble Scotty of old. He loves to run, and feel the wind running through his body. And when I finally graduated, I bring him away to be with me. And we have been together ever since. And now, its time to roll. Beam me away, Scotty!

We are on our way to pick up Scotty. He was supposed to be sent away last weekend but the waiting list is longer than expected and could not bear the thought of being away from Scotty over the long weekend. What am I supposed to do in the mornings if Scotty is not around? It would not feel the same.

REALITY CHECK: When I reach KPro, hoping to pick Scotty up, I was told that he have yet to take his bath and scrub. Adoi! Would have to come back tomorrow then..and make some changes to this weekend's plan ;(

That could easily be added as one other training mechanism or cross training that I could try in reaching my target next year. The first ride reading is as follows:

Length: 30:00
Ave Power: 106W
Peak Power : 634W
Cadence : 70rpm
Distance : 14559m
Ave Speed : 29.1kmh
L% / R% : 47 / 53

The readings confirmed my suspicion that power application from the left and right leg is slightly imbalanced. Need to work more on balancing the figures then ;)Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-5015385876143369232012-06-11T13:21:00.001+08:002012-06-11T13:21:36.055+08:00The rush starts againLike all good things, it must end sometimes. After a two week of bliss on the road (that includes actually going out of the house at 0745), the start of new school term means going out by latest 0715, send the little princess to school on time and still reach office before 0830hrs, while expecting a lot of cars on the road.

Aargghhh! Finally manage to get out only at 0720, rushed to school and onwards to the office. Traffic report on radio strangely did not list my usual route as jammed up, but highway notice stated so. Phew, heavy traffic but manageable and managed to clock in before the red mark ;)

Now...where can I park?Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-59256854664685740442012-06-01T19:40:00.000+08:002012-06-01T19:40:43.932+08:00PlayBook anyone? The tablet market is one of the most exciting. Since the introduction of iPad by Apple, everyone wants to be on the bandwagon. With Android being free, numerous phone makers churned out their offering with the intention to grab a piece of the pie. And as one of the leader in smartphones, Research in Motion presents its PlayBook.

When PlayBook first came out in April 2010, it was touted as 'the professional tablet'. Its hardware suggests so, but it's ecosystem or rather (the lack of) apps appears to be its undoing. Critics compare it to the Apple ecosystems, and Android free apps, and PlayBook offering is found wanting. With RIM seemingly slow to react to customers needs and falling behind the competition, not to mention the decline of its share prices to a fraction of its highest, it seems like PlayBook (and RIM) are heading south.

The change in leadership is inevitable. A new CEO is put in place and, it seems like the missed deadlines of past is no more, at least. The 2012 BlackBerry World signals a new urgency to be the leader once again. Announcement of the next OS, BBX and the new smartphones being demoed, raised the bar. And yesterday, the awaited update for PlayBook, OS2.1 (Dev Beta) is released, as promised, 'by the end of May.

BonBook is currently running OS 2.1.0.560 Beta and it does feel good, stable and snappy. Here's to 'RIMPIRE Strikes Back!'Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-7674390242846953822012-05-28T10:57:00.002+08:002012-05-28T10:57:23.067+08:00It's that time again...that the roads are a bit emptier.

Ahhhh..school holidays. It's that time of the year when we can discount the traffic going to school from the morning rush hour. I actually go out from the house at 0745, make my way to the petrol station, fill up and still managed to reach office before 0830hrs. If only everyday is like this, it would be bliss.

Alas, even if it's only for a few weeks per year, it definitely something to be enjoyed! This time around, it's for the next two week...woohoo!Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-45289130336859829892012-05-25T16:02:00.001+08:002012-05-25T16:02:30.370+08:00Ouch..Here I was sitting in an almost empty room listening to a presentation in English. It was painful, to say the least as the presenter is clearly struggling with the presentation. The information presented is interesting, but the actual presentation leaves much to be desired. I would understand that English is definitely not the presenter's mother tongue, but homework should be done and presentation should be practiced and rehearsed. Especially if it is in a language that you're not familiar with. Some effort would show or maybe you should stick to presenting in your mother tongue. Anyway, congratulations and better effort next time ;)Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-85066218342834578392012-02-22T15:59:00.001+08:002012-02-22T17:10:04.041+08:00Finally..BonBook is complete ;)My smartphone of choice is Blackberry, so its only fair that my choice of tablet should be one from Blackberry as well. Blackberry Playbook was launched in April 2011, with leading edge specs, at least at the moment and a clever interface which uses the bezel to navigate.

Unfortunately, Playbook was panned by critics because it was launched without a native email and PIM, which considering Blackberry's strength, was strange. To RIM's defence, access to emails and PIM was provided through BB Bridge, a stroke of genius which puts security well in perspective.

In responding to the market pressure, RIM comes out with numerous beta updates, which provides a glimpse into whats in store. Fast forward to February 2012, and finally the awaited software update, with the awaited native email and PIM, with a lot of other goodies inclusive of the impressive remote control function.

So right now, BonBook is officially running 2.0.0.7971 bridged to BonBerry with Bridge 2.0.0.25 ;). Sweeettttt!!!!Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-63363641843021530962012-02-13T15:58:00.001+08:002012-02-22T17:14:49.114+08:00Being environmental friendly......is financially rewarding.

How many of us really take a good look into our trash and sort those that we can recycle? Or is it easier to just lump it all out with our actual trash? When we buy stuffs, usually we throw away the cardboard packaging. Likewise, we dont give that much thought to the glass and plastic bottles that houses our drinks, sauces etc.

Once every two months, we try to send in the recyclables for recycling. And for the month of January, we actually get RM6.00 for our recylables. Not bad for something that some of us consider as trash. We'll update the total for Recycling Fund for 2012 over time.

Recycling Fund as at Jan 2012 stands at RM6.00Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-44158589175306116062012-01-13T17:36:00.000+08:002012-01-13T17:37:35.593+08:00One down, lots to go..After the last last ride for 2011, at the very end of December, it has been a bit quiet. Then, Am-strong suggested a ride to usher in the new year. Plans are made, friends called, invitations extended. We agreed to meet at The Office at 0730hrs on Saturday.

A pleasant surprise, when in all, five other friends show up. Am-strong, Lee Ming, Ammar, and newbies, Siti together with Fong Ling completes the group. We decided to take Am-strong's suggested route to The Summit and back. Coming out from The Office, we took the motorcycle lanes and it was maintained well. No exposed drains and ill positioned grates.

We ride for about 75 mins and stopping only to rehydrate at Kinrara R&R. Not bad for a 26km ride. Everybody is looking forward to the next ride, but it won't be Bagan Lalang. Made plans earlier and contemplated to give the ride a pass. But then again, it has been quite some time since I have last ridden Scotty (almost 4 month to be exact). So, feeling a bit optimistic, Bagan Lalang seems like a doable distance. If I can't finish the whole distance, I could just do it half way.

But then again, I have to be realistic. It has been almost four month since I last ridden Scotty. And no physical activities of any kind, other than lifting wok, pots etc. So, the sobering thought that I have also added more weight, decided to give that Bagan Lalang ride a pass.

Will need to train and ride a bit before I can re-join the Clan. There is no other way. Now, where did I put the spare tube and the new pump?

As the price of RON95 is still subsidised, its sale to foreigners are banned with foreign registered cars can only fill up with RON97.

Surprisingly, we could see foreign registered cars gleefully pumping RON95 into their tanks (at least sighted at a few petrol stations, along the North-South highway), clearly defying the rule. So, the question is who is responsible to enforce this ruling? The relevant ministry or the petrol station owner.

In an economic sense, an extra 25cents per litre would be an interesting enough carrot for petrol station owners to enforce the ruling of RON95 non-sale to foreign registered cars, as a full 50litres tank could easily brings in an extra RM12.50 in sales. So, why it is not being fully enforced by the petro station owners?

Or is petrol sales commission are based on volume only? Hence there no extra motivation for sellers or petrol station owners to enforce the sales as it is the oil companies who benefited from the increased price? I can only speculate as I am not from the industry.

Anybody care to elaborate?

Should it be cheaper to encourage green living and minimise one's carbon footprint? Should its import duty (one thing that jacks the price up) be reduced or even waived in support for the green movement?

With a new spoke (in addition to the three before that), it is ready once again to carry my big a** all over the place again.

Even when I was at the bike shop earlier today, the owner wife was commenting that I must have not been riding since then. I want to tell her that I have a few more gleaming new road bikes at home, but that is just wishful thinking, hehe. The bottom line is, I haven't had the time to drop by at the bike shop and pick up the wheels. And its just a convenient excuse for not riding :(

With that note, and pending the arrival of the storks, I don't think I would be riding in the next few days. Once the storks delivered, then it would be easier for me to plan my rides. Really need to ride and catch-up all those missed sessions. And row more often. En AzLei said, early October will be some ergo races coming up. Now, that's a thought.

Have a great week ahead people!

I cycle some days to work (not as often as I like to though) and there are days that I ride to work. As in riding on the public transportation. And today is such days.

Driving usually takes the shortest time. Riding could be on either extreme (at least if we're talking about city riding), while taking the public transport would be subject to the adherence to schedule and availability of (connecting)transport. If I am riding, need to be out of the house latest 7am, as with taking public transportation. Driving? Own sweet time, latest 740am.

Cost wise, driving could be the costliest with petrol costs on top of tolls etc (for me at least), with public tranportation would be manageable (no use outpricing yourself) and riding would basically cost, err.. near to nothing ;)

So, in choosing the preferred mode of transport, both facts must be factored in. Like today. Let's do some calculation..

Car : Toll (3.80) + Fuel (±4.00) = ±45mins
Public Transport : Ticket (4.50) = ±70mins
Riding my old bike : sweat, swear = ±90 mins

Note: The journey back home, could be a whole, totally different matter altogether. Especially if you're taking the public transport ;)

So, the song by Queens, "Bicycle Race" came to mind..

I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride where ever I like..

The foray into spring classics county sees quite a number of casulaty in the early crashes, which includes Frank Schleck.

The anticipated duel between 7 time tour champion, Lance and Contandor failed to materialised as early as the first week. Lance suffers from punctures in Stage 3 and crashed three times in the stage up Morzine. But another rivalry was cemented with the Best Young Rider was in the yellow before a broken chain derailed his Tour ambition up Bagneres-de-Luchon.

This is the rivalry we will be witnessing for years to come between Contandor and Andy Schleck, one half of the Schleck brother. While we welcome the new rivalry, another multiple winner of Le Tour, bids 'adieu' to the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong suffered a few mishaps in the first weeks and even was denied of a stage victory in a 8 men sprint in Stage 16 to Pau. Nonetheless, Radioshack is the best team in 2010.

Looking forward to an exciting 98th edition of the Tour de France next year!

Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device via Vodafone-Celcom Mobile.Enche Bonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15029918877868600936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7014347.post-46400616047423783722010-07-26T18:33:00.000+08:002010-07-26T18:31:30.626+08:00A special team..

This is a special team.

I was a member of this team by accident. During a water confidence course I met the Team Coach by accident. You see, I was wearing my favourite tee, with "US ROWING TEAM" printed at the back.

Senior : Hmm..US Rowing Team. Do you row?
Me : No.
Senior : Do you know what rowing is?
Me : I've seen people rowing on TV.
Senior : Do you want to row?
Me : (surprised) Err, they have it here? Sure, I would love to learn to row..

That particular senior happens to be the coach for UM Rowing Team, Mr Azlei and also one of the National Coach. Thus started my journey into the ultimate team sport, rowing.

Coach introduces me to the a machine build for pure torture, the Concept2 rowing ergometer, what is difference of sweep and sculling, singles, pairs, fours, eights, the strength sapping tub to the smooth, fast racing shell, macon (not related to bacon) and big blades, just to name a few thing that I have learned throughout years I was in the team.

In 1999, we were the National champion in Mens 8+, beating the likes of Kedah, in my first rowing regatta. Those days were fun. In late 2000 I became good enough to join the national team and can no longer row on behalf of my university until a few years later. Deep down, I am always proud to be a part of this special team. UM Rowing Team.

This is indeed a special team.

No, I am not the tragic Icarus, but at times in the course of my work I DIPERINTAHKAN (saya yang menurut perintah, remember?) and would need to travel by air.

We use to fly using the national carrier, but the global economic downturn forces The Company to look into alternative carrier. Hence unless necessary, we will fly by AirAsia (AA). This means all domestic, and even for international flights (not that I have been on one lately)

Anyway, being a no frills carrier, everything else must be paid for inclusive of food. But, then again, the best thing is when you're travelling on business matters, The Company will factor it all in ie preferred boarding, choice seats and food. And one thing about AA is that they serve local flavours on their flight ;)

For most of my domestic flights, the food provided for us (pre-book) is usually Nasi Lemak Pak Ali, complete with rendang daging. Scrumptious, but you get bored if you had too many over a short span of time. I was already bracing myself for Nasi Lemak Pak Ali on my day-trip to KCH.

So, imagine my pleasant surprise when I was served Uncle Chin Chicken Rice, with juice and mineral water, biscuits, teabag and coffee sachet. Courtesy of The Company.
